Why is Fire Safety in Hospitals Mandatory?

Introduction

Fire safety is an essential norm that needs to be considered during the construction of the hospital. As compared to common and general buildings, it is quite a difficult task to evacuate the people from hospitals due to different patient conditions. It is so embarrassing that there are some hospitals in which fire safety is still a word written on the water surface.  With oxygen cylinders and electronic equipment, the hospital is at high risk of fire.

Installing fire safety is not enough but training hospital staff is the mandatory thing so that they can help highly dependent and immovable patients to evacuate the hospital building in the rush. The emergency management plan (EMP) of hospitals and healthcare centers should be kept current so that it can stand against the unexpected occurrence of fire in the building.

Here are some proven fire safety measures for hospitals:

  • A detailed action plan: The fire does not allow the one to think and then take action. A detailed pre-planned action plan saves time of thinking and actions can be adopted faster to save many lives from fire. All departments of the hospital should be aware of the action plan.

  • Establish the incident command structure: Establish a functional incident command structure composed of groups and subgroups. These groups and subgroups help to follow and pass the instruction as a tree of communication.

  • Fire safety evacuation aids: Hospital evacuation is always a challenging task so it is essential to equip the hospital with evacuation mats and sheets that could hold the patient firmly while sliding to a safer location.

  • Fire fighting equipment: Install firefight equipment like smoke detectors, heat detectors, fire alarm system, water sprinklers, and fire extinguisher so that you get aware when the fire burst out and the evacuation procedure can be started. Make sure that all the equipment must be at work. These fire safety equipment help you to fight the fire and control the fire when the fire is in its initial stages.

  • Mock drills and fire safety training: This aspect has vital importance in saving lives and reducing the damage during a fire accident. Make it ensure that all your staff members are undergoing the fire safety training programs and participating in the mock drills.
