Space Heater Safety Guide

Introduction

Space heaters are widely used in winter as they can make a drafty home office feel like a toasty ski lodge. But if they are left unattended then they may lead to a big fire hazard. So always buy a quality space heater so that you can stay comfortable without putting your home on fire.


Setting up a space heater

  • Plug-in directly into the wall: Space heaters require a lot of power to generate heat. So plug the heater directly into the wall switch for the most secure electrical connection. Try to avoid an extension cord. A loose connection can spread a flame that can be dangerous.
  • Provide proper clearance: The living room and bedroom are amongst the most common places where the fire starts. Set your portable heater at least three feet away from flammable materials like curtains, blankets, or furniture. Keep a safe zone for kids and pets so that they can avoid contact with the heater.
  • Always place on the floor: Avoid placing the heater on a table, chair, or shelf as these places are not reliable. We recommend keeping the space heater on flat surfaces like the floor to avoid knocking it over. Some models may get trip over so there are chances that they may fall.

 Fire prevention features

       ·    Automatic shut-off: If your heater falls over then this feature allows the heater to shut off itself. This helps to avoid any accident. Even if you have kids these features help you.

  • Overheat detection & timers: Heaters must be designed to detect overheating. Whenever the heat capacity crosses the threshold then it must be switched off on its own. Or you may also set up timers so that they get to switch off automatically and always set up less running time.
  • Install Fire alarm system: A fire alarm system helps you to give a warning when the fire is in the initial stages. Smoke detectors and water sprinklers can warn you and help to restrict the spread of fire.
  • Install fire extinguishers: Install fire extinguishers from a branded fire extinguisher manufacturer. They may help you to extinguish the fire and fight with fire so that you can easily control it. They are much helpful during small fires.

Have a space heater at your home and feel warm but just adopt some prevention to avoid any disaster.
