Introduction

Fire is one of the most dangerous occurrences that can destroy property, lives, and livelihood. Caused by small mistakes and ignorance, fires can take place anywhere. All Fires are not the same. Fire is classified under the name of fire classes. A Fire class means to know about the cause of fire. There are some categories:

Class A

The fire caused by solid materials as textiles, paper, wood or plastics

Class B

The fire caused by flammable liquid like petrol, diesel, gasoline, oil based paints, alcohols.

Class C

Flammable Gases are the reason for the fire

Class D

Fire caused by the combustible metals like sodium, potassium, magnesium

Class E

Fire which is caused by energized electrical equipment like servers, appliances, transformers and motors.

Class F

Fire caused by cooking oils such as vegetable fats.

Different mechanisms and methods are being used to tackle different sorts of fire so that it can be controlled as soon as possible. Different types of fire extinguishers are made by different fire extinguisher distributors. Some of commonly used extinguishers are as follows.

Water Extinguishers

They are generally more useful when fire is caused by solid materials that are class A fire. There are four types of water extinguishers.

1.      Water jet

2.      Water Spray

3.      Water extinguisher with additive

4.      Water mist or fog

This cannot be used when fire is due to electrical short circuiting.

Foam Extinguishers

They are generally used for class A or Class b Fires. It seals the surface of flammable liquid so that fire can not reach it and we can control fire. They cannot be used on free flowing liquids fire.

Powder Extinguisher

Powder extinguishers are multi tasking extinguishers as they can be used for most of the cases like class A, Class B, Class C. This method is used as a last option as they cause loss of visibility and agents used in this are quite harmful for everyone.

Carbon dioxide Extinguisher

This is widely used at offices where electrical equipments are being used. They are easy to operate and do not have any adverse effects.

Fire Blankets

This is one of the most important equipment, but unfortunately, it is considered the least important. Whenever fire happens due to kitchen oils, then having fire blankets can help one to evacuate the building with utmost care. So it is recommended to have as many fire blankets as possible in the house with respect to the number of your family members. They are used when a person catches fire as it helps in cutting the air supply so that fire can extinguish on its own.

Wet Chemical Extinguishers

They are commonly used for class F fire. As the chemicals react with the oils and foam soap like solution so that fire won’t get any medium to spread.

So at last fire is a deadly weapon in order to control it we have to know about its cause and only then it can be treated properly and extinguished as soon as possible.
